The App Grotte di Castellana Guida LIS
A GUIDE FOR THE HEARING-IMPAIRED
The App Grotte di Castellana Guida Lis is a video guide, with Italian sign language LIS, of the itinerary of the Caves of Castellana.
Created as part of the 100% Accessible Caves project, it also enables hearing impaired people to take advantage of the guide service inside the karst complex.
From the description of the different environments to the useful notions for visiting the Caves of Castellana, as well as the presentation of the two possible itineraries and information on shows and events: a video guide designed for the hearing impaired, created with the support of specialized technicians and with the contents created by guides of the Caves of Castellana.
100% Accessible Caves
There are two types of visits, both available via reservation, and subject to the degree of the visitor’s disability conditions:
• The special tour, which is organized with dedicated timetables and methods, lasts about 90 minutes, an adequate time to welcome guests with disabilities and also allow family members and carers to fully enjoy the stillness of the images and sounds of the cave in a magical atmosphere.
The group, guided and assisted by specialized operators, accesses the gigantic first cave “Grave “ with a lift and visits a series of caves, predominantly along the main itinerary of the Caves of Castellana, for about 400 meters on an accessible trail that goes from the “Grave” to the Cavern of the Well.
• The visit to the White Cave, more demanding in terms of duration (about 3 hours) and distance (3 km long round trip).
Compared to the special tour, the group, guided and assisted by specialized operators as well, travels along the entire itinerary of the Caves of Castellana.
The visit to the White Cave is possible only by respecting some minimum feasibility conditions.
The visit can be anticipated by an introductory explanation in the “Franco Anelli” Speleological Museum (building adjacent to the lifts) or be completed in the same building at the end of the activity (both only upon request by the group). The service provides computer and telephone consultancy and assistance from the beginning of the “dedicated visit” to final greetings.
Accessibility is guaranteed to wheelchairs with a maximum width of 65 cm. The company Grotte di Castellana srl is equipped with (a limited number of) wheelchairs.
A special experience
This workshop is focused on the integration and enhancement of various abilities, and turns the visit of the Caves of Castellana certainly into a special experience, a symbolic journey that favors the encounter between the Body of the Person and the Body of Mother Earth. Participants will be guided to listen, to explore and to welcome the musicality of Nature with all their senses. The natural environment of the Caves of Castellana is not only a physical place but also a “native-affective” place to be discovered in every stone, in every rock, in every drop, in every form.
The workshop starts off with a meeting prior to the visit, designed to enhance the notion of mind, senses and body and to equip the participants (groups or students) with personal perception tools. By focusing on curiosity, tactile, auditory and synaesthetic stimuli, they will be able to immerse themselves into the underground environment with a sharpened perception of self, becoming active explorers and protagonists of their own journey, together with their companions.
The visit is followed by a meeting to re-elaborate the experiences lived through all available perceptions.
